It is my pleasure and honor to pay homage
to one of the young pioneers of the new Harlem Renaissance Ms. Melba
Wilson. Melba is one of the youngest movers and shakers of the transition
of the Harlem social life in the l990's. When very few had visions
of the potential Harlem had to be a housing, food and entertainment
powerhouse, Melba was planning. Her departure from the Sylvia's
Restaurant Empire was imminent.
I was fortunate enough to come in contact
with such a great person while working for Hennessey and Moet. Melba
was the host of the most successful open mic night at Sylvia's Also.
Melba hired me as a bartender from time to time. This event was
in the 1990's and many new talents local and distant assembled on
Wednesday's to sing R&B, rap, gospel and the hottest bands played.
The crowd wore everything from tuxedos to white tee shirts and baggy
Jeans. Melba had the magic, charisma and personality to bring all
people together without incident and she had a long run. For unknown
reasons, Sylvia Woods (yes that Sylvia) pulled the plug on the most
consistent, successful weekday haunt in Harlem.
The grapevine had Melba doing something
at Minton's Playhouse (with Robert Dinero as a potential partner),
on 125th Street and taking over any restaurant or bar that was on
the way down. The town had its fingers crossed for her to make it.
Melba was fortunate to escape a catastrophe when the September 11,
2001 misfortune occurred at the WTC, She was the host of the Sunday
brunch at Windows of the World. Word has it that a staff meeting
was taking place with the kitchen and dining room staff. We were
blessed to still have her and now she is finally on the geographic
map with MELBA'S.
I went over to show my respect and to see
what Melba came up with. One part of me believes that Melba could
sell ‹Kibbles and BitsŠ and she would have a line out of the door.
I saw the menu and the theme was ‹American comfort foodŠ. Favorites
such as local chicken and waffles, mini burgers, fish and chips,
grilled salmon, three cheese macaroni and cheese (don't sleep),
high octane vegetable stuffed whiting make the menu very "comfortable"
indeed, You can expect quality and made to order freshness. The
space is small but alive with energy, networking and Melba‰s love
and magic.
Custom chandeliers, wall mirrors,
cushions wall seating, panel windows, brick facing, with full length
mini blinds make the decor and the ambiance special. Melba works
the room of faithful followers, local power brokers new Harlem residents
and visitors. She looks you in the eye smiles and she will make
sure that you are the only guest that matters. She will remember
you by name and this is a new spot on the rise.
I neglected to mention the green apple sorbet,
home made ice creams, chocolate cake and sweet potato pies. Try
to leave room for dessert. Good luck Melba, and for the record there
is nothing except crickets at Sylvia's Also. I said it and that
is in the rear view.
