There are many culinary treasures in Harlem that remain undiscovered. Housing is a visual transformation in the urban development of Harlem. A benchmark of the urban renewal is the area between 116th Street between Lenox Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. An appropriate name for a restaurant in this period in Harlem's history is the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant.

The Uptown Renaissance Restaurant is a pillar on 116th Street that is developing into a mini restaurant row. With a modern décor of walnut walls, modern light fixtures and lots of mirrors, this spot also captures the authentic Harlem with its long counter and spinning stools. There are lots of intimately situated tables, and a stage for special events and entertainment. The staircase that goes downstairs into the dining room reveals an instant feeling of comfort and serenity.

One of the main features of the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant is its late night dining (24 hours weekends). Listed as one of the Top late Night Meals Spots on the www.eatinharlem.com website, you can come here after you have painted the town red. A perfect spot to order omelets, Belgium Waffles, burgers, hot sandwiches, steaks and dessert after being out has much more to offer. The menu features southern and comfort food favorites prepared for the health conscious.

There is absolutely no pork served here, no artificial seasoning used such as MSG or nitrates and they use 100% vegetable oil for frying. A wide selection of light meals and fresh chef's salads are available for the weight conscious. The presence of onion, peppers, and garlic in foods such as meatloaf, turkey wings, ox tails and the curried chicken make the home made taste shine. There are hearty favorites available such as the Porterhouse Steak and combination meals like the Cornish Hen and Shrimp. Daily specials round out the menu for variety. There is also a large selection of side orders like collard greens, candied yams, black eyed peas, macaroni and cheese and stuffing. Try the "Mocktails" or frozen drinks like the pina colada, the strawberry or mango smoothie style drinks (discrete B.Y.O.B. is at the manager's discretion).

Cap your visit off with one of the home made desserts such as the pineapple coconut cake, peach cobbler, cheesecake, sweet potato pie or chocolate cake. Get some herbal tea or coffee for the road. This is one of the best kept secrets. Owners Renee and Claudia are always on site and would like to share this secret with as many people as possible. Give them a visit and bring your appetite. Eat in or take out. Look for a major renovation in 2006 that will change the face of 116th Street!
