Spoonbread has all the ambiance and style that any moderately priced restaurant could offer. Gently nestled in the heart of Harlem, Spoonbread is a restaurant that truly stands out. The sun shines through huge front windows, creating a bright, airy atmosphere. The checkered curtains and friendly staff make you feel as though you're dining in your grandmother's kitchen.

The menu is ample, featuring a wide swath of Southern favorites from which to tempt your palate. I chose to sample the fried chicken, a soul food staple, and it was delicious! The chicken was crispy and fried to a perfect golden brown, and my sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens were fresh and tasty. My two colleagues tried the barbecued chicken, which received an enthusiastic four thumbs up! By the end of the meal, they were trying to figure out the "secret ingredient" in the sauce and vowing to come back for more.

Spoonbread also offers a "Brown Bag" lunch special that harkens back to the days when slaves took their lunch to the fields in a brown bag. An excellent value at around $7.00, you can choose from a variety of sandwiches, including chicken salad, meat loaf, and a BLT.

Don't forget to save room for dessert! Freshly baked sweet potato pie or homemade chocolate cake make a wonderful mid-afternoon snack or after dinner delight.

There are some restaurants that truly separate themselves from the pack by their food, style and staff, Spoonbread is certainly one such rare gem.
